Advancing Press Freedom Amid Challenges: HRNJ-Uganda’s 2024 Reflection and Call to Action

hrnj-uganda

As 2024 draws close, the Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda (HRNJ-Uganda) extends its heartfelt gratitude to all stakeholders who have tirelessly worked to uphold journalists’ rights and safeguard freedom of expression.

We deeply appreciate the unwavering dedication of media professionals and actors who continue to champion independent journalism, give a voice to the marginalized, and hold those in power accountable.

The media landscape in Uganda faced persistent challenges in 2024 much like in 2023 when our Press Freedom Index (PFI) report documented 122 media rights violations and abuses. Journalists encountered numerous hurdles this year, including restricted access to news sites and unjust dismissals.

In the face of these obstacles, HRNJ-Uganda remained steadfast in its mission. We worked diligently to promote journalists ‘ rights and freedoms through comprehensive research, documentation, capacity-building initiatives, and stakeholder engagement. We also provided essential legal support to journalists affected while performing their duties and addressed emerging violations.

Our progress would not have been possible without the invaluable support of government agencies, civil society organizations, donors, media houses, individual journalists, and press associations. These partnerships and collaborations have been instrumental in driving our shared mission forward.

Reflecting on 2024, we recognize the strides made toward advancing press freedom and freedom of expression. However, significant work still lies ahead.

Looking toward 2025, we urge the government and key decision-makers to adopt policies and regulations that foster a free, independent, and critical media—an essential pillar of our democracy.

HRNJ-Uganda remains resolute in defending journalists’ rights and promoting a safer and freer media environment. We are determined to amplify our efforts in the year ahead.

We sincerely thank all our partners and stakeholders for their unwavering support and look forward to continued collaboration in 2025.

Wishing you a prosperous and impactful new year,
HRNJ-Uganda Team
