HRNJ-Uganda | Kampala; The Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda (HRNJ-Uganda) calls on security forces to ensure the safety and security of journalists reporting on the March to Parliament protest scheduled for July 23, 2024.

In light of the events on Monday, July 15, 2024, when journalists were assaulted while the police intervened to disrupt a press conference organized by the opposition National Unity Platform, we are deeply concerned about the safety of journalists covering the upcoming protests.

We urge all security personnel to exercise restraint and ensure the safety and security of journalists on the ground. It is imperative that journalists’ fundamental rights are respected, and their work is protected under the law.

In parallel, HRNJ-Uganda also calls on journalists to adhere to the highest ethical standards while covering these events. Journalists are advised to be vigilant and to take necessary precautions to safeguard their lives and equipment. Media professionals must remain focused on their reporting duties while prioritizing their safety.

We call upon all stakeholders, including those in government, media owners and managers, civil society, and the public, to support and protect journalists as they work to bring vital information to the citizens of Uganda in a bid to fight corruption.

As HRNJ-Uganda, we stand in solidarity with all journalists and reaffirm our commitment to defending and promoting press freedom as enshrined in regional and international mechanisms.
