Publisher Charles Yates of Integrity Watch newspaper was on Monday, March 23, 2020 invited by the Liberia National Security Agency (NSA) for questioning over an alleged social media post linking the Liberian government to corruption.
Following his first appearance at the offices of the NSA, Yates complained of undergoing thorough interrogation for five hours before being released to his lawyer. He was requested to return for further questioning on March 25, 2020.
A group of concerned Liberian Journalists has condemned the action of the National Security Agency stating that Yates has committed no crime.
The National Security Agency is yet to make a public statement about the interrogation of the journalist.
Commenting on the ongoing saga, the Executive Director of CEMESP, Malcolm Joseph said we are taking a studied position about the reported issue of Yates to better understand the issues at stake, but it becomes a troubling development for press freedom when the national security agency starts going after people for social media comments.
