César Ricaurte has defended freedom of expression for decades, and has – for several years – led Fundamedios, a non-profit organisation whose “primary aim is to support media outlets and journalists.” The organisation has been an IFEX member since 2011 and has played a crucial role in denouncing attacks on freedom of expression and in demanding the protection of this right under the government of Rafael Correa. As a result of this work, Ricaurte has been constantly stigmatized and threatened by media outlets and supporters of the former president Correa.
We are alarmed by the threats he has received since the sentence was handed down on 27 June by the Court of Appeals of Pichincha Provincial Court, and we are concerned about the possibility of an arrest warrant being issued against César Ricaurte.
“All IFEX member organisations call upon the Ecuadorian authorities to investigate the threats Ricaurte has received since his sentence was announced, and that he is provided with the necessary security measures,” said IFEX Executive Director Annie Game.
